Job Description – Music Director
St Peter & St Paul’s Anglican Church, Ottawa
St Peter & St Paul’s Ottawa is an eclectic, dynamic, downtown church, looking for a Music Director to lead and develop our music ministry that is theologically rich and encourages vibrant congregational participation in worship.
General
Meet with the Rector weekly to pray and discuss the direction of the music ministry.
Strong vocals and strong guitar or piano player. Need to be strong enough to lead solo if necessary.
An ability to balance traditional hymns and contemporary praise worship that follows the ACNA lectionary.
Weekly Responsibilities
To support the vision and mission of St Peter & St Paul’s by coordinating, leading and developing music ministry, including but
not limited to:
Lead worship on Sunday mornings 50% of the time
Selecting hymns and songs for Sunday worship in conjunction with the pastoral team
Recruiting and developing volunteer musicians
Scheduling music teams, and working with sound tech volunteers and guest musicians
Seasonal Responsibilities
The Music Director would be expected to lead worship on high liturgical Sundays: Christmas Eve 7pm, Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, and Pentecost Sunday.
Advent: The Music Director will need to prepare an amateur choir with hymns and praise songs. This service generally involves 6 weeks of rehearsal for the choir. The Music Director would need to help organize the event. It could be split between 2 people, one leading the choir, the other the congregational worship.
Community Christmas Sing-along: the Music Director would help organize this outreach event, which is a family friendly fun time of singing both secular and traditional Christmas Carols.
Coordinate music for Ash Wednesday and Holy Week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday services are more traditional, often using a quartet or octet of singers to sing traditional choral music, ideally 4-6 weeks of rehearsal for the quartet/octet.
Coordinate music for weddings and funerals as required.
Timeframe
The contract offered is for one year in length, with an initial trial period of 3 months. After one year, the salary, job description, work environment, etc. may be updated or changed. At any time, this contract is subject to change based on the mutual agreement of both parties.
Qualifications
Has a committed and maturing faith in Jesus Christ.
Is committed to orthodox Christianity, as articulated in the beliefs of St Peter & St Paul’s.
Has a vision and passion for congregational musical worship.
The Music Director will be, or will commit to be, an active member of St Peter & St Paul’s.
Previous ministry training and/or theological training is an asset.
Familiarity working with soundboard and sound systems an asset.
